The Dead Milkmen at PennState 1987

After reading Elk's posts about the Dead Milkmen, I decided to post up some MP3s of a live concert recording from PennState's main campus on 7/12/87. The show ended early because someone egged a band member. Rodney is in fine form, verbally abusing the Hooters, Madonna, and others.

I'll post more later when there's time & I'm not ready to sleep, but I took advantage of a chance to have my picture taken with a broadcasting legend, Mr. Joe Franklin, this past Tuesday night, August 8th.

He's not physically tall, but he's a giant in TV host history.

End of a long journey - RIP Len Vreeland

What a day today was!

My wife's dad recently passed away, and today was the day we had a memorial gathering and spread his ashes. His youngest daughter and his oldest son rode 20+ miles on their bikes to the top of Blue Mountain near Danielsville, PA.

It wasn't until today that it really sunk in that Len was a world-class athlete, accomplishing feats most could only dream of. He made the Guinness Book of World Records for most miles ridden on rollers in 24 straight hours on 10/12/75. At age 50 he ran a 50-mile super-marathon. He biked across the USA at age 52, having failed an attempt a year earlier due to strong headwinds.

At 11:48 p.m. the caravan arrives at the Holland Tunnel only to learn that one of the tubes is closed for repairs. This unexpected circumstance threatens to postpone Len's entrance into the city. A New York Transit Policeman comes to the rescue and like a guardian angel, leads Len and his crew through the closed section of the tunnel. Workmen in the tunnel that was under repair were cheering all along the way.

This afternoon, I drove my wife, niece & daughter to NYC, and we dropped some of Len's ashes in the Holland Tunnel, while blasting "What A Wonderful World" on the stereo and in turn crying, cheering & clapping.

JACKSON, NJ - Six Flags Great Adventure is opening the world’s tallest and fastest roller coaster this spring—a thrill ride that accelerates to 128 mph in 3.5 seconds and rises 456 feet off the ground.

Plans for Kingda Ka, which is expected to be the cornerstone of new development at the central New Jersey amusement park, were to be unveiled Wednesday.

The current speed and height record holder is “Top Thrill Dragster” at Cedar Point amusement park in Sandusky, Ohio. Made by Intamin—the same company Six Flags hired to build Kingda Ka—Dragster shoots riders to 120 mph in 4 seconds and takes them to a height of 420 feet.

An animated depiction of Kingda Ka shows the coaster creeping slowly, stopping and then launching forward horizontally at nearly 130 mph before climbing at a 90-degree angle more than 45 stories above the park.

The coaster then spirals 270 degrees as it plummets, flattens out and climbs again as it shoots over a 129-foot hill, which the company says will make riders feel weightless. It’s over in about 50 seconds.

Well, it seems my brother Mark and his wife Christine are due to become parents any day (hour?) now. I’m not sure when one of them will update their blogs, but I won’t steal their thunder unless they want me to post something.

Here’s hoping to an easy birth with no complications, and much love to the parents - the rollercoaster ride begins anon.

This video begs the question - are D&D players still considered the geekiest of geeks? Even with the internet and 1337-speak? What about UNIX and LINUX users? Is dork worse than geek, since geeks are often the computer programmers that make above-average salaries?

Well, the first review/spoiler is in. The big-screen adaptation of The Hitch-hiker's Guide To The Galaxy, one of my all-time favourite radio plays turned into a book turned into a text-based computer adventure game, will be in theatres soon. I still plan on seeing it, but something about Zaphod Beeblebrox not having the right number of heads has me a bit torqued. I'm not feeling hoopy about this at all.

This film may end up in the "Mostly Harmless" category, I'm afraid. Let's hope not.

I suppose I have to start sometime, somewhere, so this is it.

As I look around my home office, I am reminded of what a cluttered slob I am. Stacks of CDs, piles of papers and bills, just too much Stuff everywhere. I'm torn by the need to purge & clean, and the feeling that I don't want to throw things away. What I really need is some shelves that go to the 10-foot ceiling so I can get all my VHS tapes and books better organized.

I guess I'll stop typing this & do some straightening up. Feh.
